There are so many ski resort options to visit around my home in Northern New Jersey and Belleayre Mountain won the battle of ‘which mountain is the best for snowboard beginners’. Many of the reviews online lauded it for its easy distance to the city, great training team and slopes, and the lack of crowd on weekdays. The biggest point for me was the package deal combo; $99 for a 1-hour group lesson, rental gear, and ski lift. Before diving into this guide, read the first article in this series, ‘A Black Girl’s Guide to Snowboarding and Skiing – the Prep Phase.’ Once fully prepared for a fantastic experience, delve into my black girl’s guide to snowboarding at Belleayre. Hopefully, my experience as a black woman snowboarding will help guide you through a successful ski trip.

My Experience – Learning How to Snowboard in Belleayre
Day 1 of a Black Girl’s Guide to Snowboarding in Belleayre – Drive to Catskills, New York!
Embarking on my journey from Northern New Jersey to the cozy boutique hotel I had booked in Phoenicia, New York, Graham and Co., the drive took approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. However, due to unexpected heavy snowfall on the first day in the area, the journey was extended by an hour. This unexpected weather required cautious driving for safety, emphasizing the importance of planning for weather conditions. Note to self: Always check the forecast and be prepared for winter driving challenges to avoid sliding on icy roads.
Despite the initial challenges, my arrival at the Catskills marked the beginning of an eventful adventure. The anxiety from navigating through the snow was quickly replaced with a sense of joy as I entered the hotel’s driveway. While driving in the snow had its challenges, the picturesque sight of snowfall over the hotel added a touch of beauty to the overall experience.

Before driving up to Belleayre Mountain from New Jersey, I also purchased my first-ever snowboarding basewear and outerwear as those were not available for rent at the ski resort. I go into the deeper details about what to wear in A Black Girl’s Guide to Snowboarding and Skiing – the Prep Phase but see below for the main gist of what I purchased.
My Snowboarding Outfit in Belleayre
Don’t forget to also have a lip balm handy while on the slopes, see our faves here.
After checking in and unpacking, I ventured back into the snow for my pre-scheduled and well-earned dinner reservation at Dandelion.

Day 2 of a Black Girl’s Guide to Snowboarding in Belleayre- Mind over Matter, Time to Snowboard.
Watching a group of fearless 5-year-olds conquer an activity that seemed challenging for me was a motivational moment. I arrived at 8:15 am for my 9 am – 11 am lesson, where the process of fitting into my snowboard rental kit began. As the boots clamped onto my board, doubts and questions about my decision surfaced.
“What if I fail?”
No, I won’t give up easily, I reassured myself.
30 minutes into the lesson, doubts grew, and the struggle to get up after each fall made me question my fitness level.
“I’m not fit enough.” “What was I thinking?” “Can I just lay here and wallow in defeat?”
Observing 5-year-olds facing similar challenges but bouncing back faster, I drew strength from their resilience. Despite the difficulties, I pressed on.
My primary obstacle was the fear of losing control. The unnatural feeling of having my feet strapped to a sliding board made progression difficult. Despite understanding the stance and required movements, any attempt to move resulted in flailing and falling. Controlling the board’s movement through heel or toe edges presented a mental block.
Lesson 1 – Start with what works best for you and don’t hesitate to request a gear change if needed.
An hour into the lesson, it was evident that my instructor couldn’t snap me out of it, and I was reaching the point of frustration with myself. In snowboarding, control comes from two edges: the heel edge and the toe edge. The heel edge allows progression facing forward, while the toe edge moves in reverse, requiring the snowboarder to face backward. The harder the heels dig in, the more control over speed and direction, while the toes control the board when moving backward.
Lesson 2 – Focus on looking in the direction you want to move and avoid looking down to prevent unnecessary falls!
Most beginners find it easier to start with heel edge control, but for me, it felt more natural to start with toe edge control. After an hour of attempting to progress from the heel edge, I requested to focus on toe edge control. This adjustment felt more intuitive to me. By the end of the two-hour mark, I could snowboard backward without assistance and descend the bunny slope without falling. Importantly, getting up from falls was easier with toe edge control than transitioning from a seated position to a squat.
What is a Bunny Slope?
A bunny slope is a gentle incline that is typically near the base area and the easiest area to ski and snowboard for beginners. The gentle incline allows for better control in learning the base skiing or snowboarding movements, allowing the body to become comfortable with moving on ice before applying the same techniques on steeper slopes.
Tip: Make sure to prepare your body’s strength at least 2 weeks ahead of your ski or snowboarding trip. I noticed a significant difference in my body’s ability to endure and maintain balance much better than on my past trips. I break down what I did to prepare for snowboarding here.
Lesson 3 – Once I became comfortable with toe edge movements, controlling the board with my heels felt less scary. Trusting my lower body’s ability to control my movements was key.
By day’s end, the initial shame of wanting to give up had evaporated. At 2 pm, I had graduated from the lowest bunny slope to the mid-range level, gaining confidence with each descent. Though more growth awaited in the upcoming lessons, I was now confident I could become a competent snowboarder.
My left shoulder was sore from repeated falls, but pride in my progress overshadowed the pain (learn how to fall safely here). I returned to the hotel, showered, and celebrated with a scrumptious dinner at Peekamoose, eager for the challenges of day 2.
PS – I spotted 3 black ladies at Belleayre, and spoke with 2—one from Cameroon, snowboarding with college friends, and the other from Antigua, spending MLK weekend snowboarding with her boyfriend. The third, about 12 years old, was having lunch with an older man, likely her dad.
Day 3 of a Black Girl’s Guide to Snowboarding in Belleayre – Body no be Fire Wood, We Must Advance!
“Body no be firewood” is a popular Nigerian proverbial slang, roughly translating to the body not being firewood – it shouldn’t be used until it burns to ashes. In other words, the body needs its rest.
Day 2 presented a challenge. During my morning yoga, I noticed snowfall, both exciting and intimidating. Snow meant a soft cushion for falls, but it also meant slower driving on icy roads. Running 15 minutes late for my lesson at Belleayre Ski Resort due to the weather, my instructor, Charles, understood. We started with me showcasing my abilities and explaining my struggle with heel edge control.
He taught me how to fall safely and then focused on getting me comfortable with using my heels for control. Having mastered movement using my toes, using my heels felt less intimidating. A task that had me flailing in fear 24 hours prior now felt like no big deal – mind over matter indeed. We progressed to traversing down the slope, and it felt like I had gotten the hang of it.
What Does it Mean to Traverse when Snowboarding?
Traversing is the ability to use each foot to control the movement from left and right across the slope. For easy understanding, I found the video below helpful in breaking down the movement.
Day 2 was a short lesson, but like day 1, I stayed on the slope and practiced traversing on my own. After a few runs down the mid-bunny slope, I decided to challenge myself on the highest level of easy slopes (green).

Most mountain slopes have three color-coded levels: Green (easy), Blue (intermediate), and Black (expert). Unlike the first two easy green levels at Belleayre, level 3 green required a ski lift. On my way, I met Charles and informed him of my plan, luckily, he joined me to ensure a safe descent. Levels 1 and 2 were similar, so how challenging could level 3 be? Ha.
The gondola ride felt like an hour, questioned my sanity as fear and trepidation set in. How do I slide off the gondola? What if it gets too steep? Why do I put myself in these situations? Oh, it’s time to slide off the gondola!
Slide, slide, splat.
I fell, not as terribly as some that got off after me. Now, it was time to snowboard miles down the slope. Charles was counting on me, and I was counting on myself. The cold was biting on the gondola, and my fingers felt frozen despite double layers of gloves. My instructor provided a thermal pouch, offering immediate relief.
Oddly, the new comfort with heel edge movement vanished from my body’s memory. After several falls down the steeper slopes, my body decided to recall the snowboard lessons. I wish I recorded the moment I snowboarded with self-assuredness. After a near-catastrophic incident that had me tumbling from catching an edge, I called it a day, acknowledging my body needed rest for the next lesson.
What does it mean to catch an edge while snowboarding?
“Catching an edge” in snowboarding refers to a situation where the leading edge of the snowboard gets unexpectedly caught in the snow. This is a common occurrence, especially among beginners as they learn to navigate the slopes safely. It typically happens when a snowboarder attempts to make a turn without properly allowing the board to slide into the next position.
When catching an edge occurs, it can lead to sudden and unexpected falls. The snowboarder may lose balance, and the caught edge may result in a trip or tumble. Learning how to avoid catching an edge is an essential skill for beginners, and it involves proper weight distribution, body positioning, and controlled turning techniques.
Snowboarders can minimize the risk of catching an edge by:
- Weight Distribution: Maintaining a balanced weight distribution between the front and back foot helps prevent the board from tipping forward or backward.
- Proper Turning: Executing turns smoothly by gradually shifting weight and allowing the board to rotate in the desired direction can prevent the catching of edges.
- Body Positioning: Keeping the body centered over the snowboard and aligning it with the direction of movement helps maintain stability and control.
- Terrain Awareness: Being aware of the slope and adjusting riding techniques to match the terrain can reduce the chances of catching an edge.
- Progressive Learning: Progressing through the learning stages gradually, starting with basic maneuvers and gradually advancing to more complex turns, helps build foundational skills and confidence.
Catching an edge is a common learning experience in snowboarding, and with practice and proper technique, riders can minimize its occurrence and enjoy a smoother, more controlled descent down the slopes.
While day 2 didn’t end as hoped, I surpassed expectations. I aimed to learn how to control speed on steeper slopes, with four more days of learning ahead. My goal was competence at beginner level 3, but reaching intermediate level 5 would surpass expectations.
It also snowed throughout the day, and the idea of going anywhere beyond my hotel did not appeal to me. I still had 5 packs of leftovers from my dinner at Dandelion, and my hotel had a social den where I could microwave my food, tuck in by a fireplace, and watch a movie on the projector. In the spirit of indulging, I picked up a s’mores pack from the hotel’s reception area along with a couple of cans of local beer to complete my lazy night.
PS – I noticed another black girl on the slopes on day 2, but I was too exhausted to have a friendly chat. Overhearing her excitement to learn how to snowboard with her friends made me smile. I felt an odd sort of camaraderie and wanted to shun my aching joints to go snowboard with her, but then I remembered, body no be firewood, time to rest for day 4.
Day 4 of a Black Girl’s Guide to Snowboarding in Belleayre – Sleep In and Drive up to North Creek for Gore Mountain
Belleayre Mountain Ski Center
Why Go to Belleayre Mountain
Belleayre Mountain is widely regarded as the top pick for beginners, offering a more budget-friendly option compared to other nearby ski resorts like Hunter and Windham Mountains. It boasts excellent facilities and trails, and with fewer crowds, there’s ample space for beginners to progress safely. An outstanding feature is that it’s the sole ski resort in the Catskills equipped with a gondola.
Being closer to the city, Belleayre attracts a more diverse range of guests compared to other slopes further north of New York.

For intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders, Belleayre boasts 61 trails to keep you entertained. The terrain is well-balanced with 22% for beginners, 58% for intermediates, and 20% for advanced levels. Eating at Belleayre Mountain
There are some decent food options at Belleayre Mountain to choose from. I preferred to snack on fruits and light snacks when my body needed a healthy boost. On my last day here, I had a filling bowl of chili with a hearty dollop of sour cream and a sprinkling of cheese and jalapeno. That was so tasty and warmed me up so well.
The Discovery Lodge and Overlook Lodge have a food Marketplace where you can order a variety of options from Bavarian pretzels with beer cheese to salads. For a fun sweet treat, there is the Waffle Cabin at the base of the Discovery Lodge for sugar waffles with melted chocolate drizzles.
I thought the price of water was a bit steep, so if you’re a cheapskate like me, bring your water bottle and use the water fountain located in between the restrooms at the basement level of the Discovery Lodge.

How to Get to and Around Belleayre Mountain
Belleayre Mountain is approximately 2.5 hours from NYC and Northern New Jersey. For those without cars planning to spend multiple days in the area, renting a car is the most convenient option. I typically use either Discover Cars or Rental Cars to compare the best deals. I’ve found that Rental Cars offers more options, especially in rural parts of New York.
There are various transportation options to reach Belleayre—whether you prefer driving, flying to a nearby airport, taking a bus alongside fellow skiers and snowboarders, or opting for a train ride. If you’re planning to stay overnight or longer in the area, having your vehicle provides the utmost convenience. However, there are alternative transportation choices available to suit your preferences.
For day trips from NYC, companies like Ovr Ride offer shuttle services with various pickup points in the city, providing an opportunity to make friends before the trip!
If you’re planning a self-drive winter visit, it’s advisable to keep the number for Ulster County’s snow-clearing truck service handy: +1(845)688-9901. Having this number can serve as a safety net in case you encounter difficulties driving on icy roads.
If you’re flying into New York for your Belleayre Mountain trip, Albany International Airport is a 2-hour drive away, and Stewart International Airport is 1.5 hours away.
You can also get there using a combination of train and the local bus system with the following options:
Take the Amtrak train from NY Penn to Poughkeepsie – 1.5 hours travel time. Then switch to two Ulster County buses, first the KPL-NB bus to Kingston Plaza – 1 hour travel time and then the Z-WB bus – 50 minutes travel time. The Ulster County buses are complimentary. Total travel time is about 4 hours, transfer time included.
Take the MTA Metro-North Hudson line train from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie for 2 hours travel time. Then switch to two Ulster County buses, first the KPL-NB bus to Kingston Plaza – 1 hour travel time and then the Z-WB bus – 50 minutes travel time. The Ulster County buses are complimentary. You may also use a combination of Amtrak’s trains and pick up a rental car at Rhinecliff by getting on the train from NY Penn Station to Rhinecliff – 1 hour 43 minutes travel time. There’s an ongoing New York by Rail partnership with Enterprise where you will get picked up for free from the train stations, so when you book using the link, it will ensure you book from the right Enterprise location – 1051 Ulster Ave, Kingston, NY 12401.
The Enterprise office is about 9 miles away from the train station, make sure to call them at +1 845-336-4700 at least 30 minutes ahead of train arrival time to schedule a free pick-up service from the train station.

The Enterprise office is about 3.5 miles away from the train station, make sure to call them at +1 845-485-2222 at least 25 minutes ahead of train arrival time to schedule a free pick-up service from the train station.
Tip – other rental car companies in the area may also offer free pick-up service, so if you find better deals with them, call to find out if they will pick you up from the station.
Getting around Belleayre Mountain without a car, the Ulster County buses offer complimentary shuttle services from some areas to Belleayre Mountain during the ski season, the Belleayre Express, from 7:20 am – 4:30 pm, click here for their bus schedule and their pickup points. You will also find the bus schedule on Google Maps, so choose your accommodation wisely!
Pro Tip: Before hitting the road, ensure you download an offline map of the region on your preferred GPS app. In many parts I visited in the Catskills, except at Belleayre, cell service was almost non-existent. Having the ability to navigate the roads with my offline map proved to be a lifesaver.
What You Need to Know Before Heading to Belleayre Mountain
Purchase your lift tickets online for discounted deals, same-day purchases at the ski resort are not guaranteed. If you plan to rent their equipment and take lessons, it is required to make reservations in advance, 3 days ahead, minimum, is my suggestion.
For beginners, Belleayre offers package deals that, according to their website, “includes a lower mountain ticket with access to the Learning Area Carpets & Lightning Quad lifts, a 1 to 1.5-hour group lesson, and rental equipment for the day.” While I prefer 2-hour lessons, the price for this is a steal compared to the surrounding mountains.

Where to Stay Around Belleayre Mountain
Belleayre does not have its lodging but there are so many options of places to stay within 20 minutes driving distance from the mountain. Apres-ski in the area is a lot more subdued and more in line with romantic or family nights by the fireplace while roasting marshmallows kinda vibe. Most people I met did day trips to Belleayre Mountain, but I recommend spending a long weekend there. The air, energy, and quiet respite from the city will do the body and soul good.
Where I Stayed Near Belleayre Mountain – Graham and Co.
I stayed at Graham and Co., a charming no-frills boutique hotel, with a Scandinavian touch, located approximately 17 minutes drive from Belleayre Mountain. Given the almost nonexistent data service in the region, the hotel’s super-fast Wi-Fi proved to be a welcome feature. The modern rustic ambiance of my room, equipped with a comfortable bed and the soothing scent of their branded body wash, created a delightful retreat. The chance to make s’mores by the fireplace (supplies available at the reception) added a memorable touch to my stay.
The hotel’s strategic location, allowing a less than 5-minute walk to Phoenicia’s ‘downtown’ with its array of restaurants and bars, was a definite plus. Graham and Co also offer complimentary breakfasts on weekends, and my room conveniently had a mini-fridge, perfect for storing leftovers from local restaurants.
The hotel features a den room, providing a warm and communal space for guests. Adorned with twinkling lights, a fireplace, a microwave, a library of books and board games, and a projector for movies or TV shows, it’s an ideal spot to unwind. However, it can get a bit chilly during heavy snowfall. On my last night, I cozied up by the fireplace, wrapped in a couple of their thick Mexican blankets, and enjoyed watching Knives Out while savoring some delicious s’mores.
For those planning to visit Belleayre Mountain during the ski season without a car, the hotel is a convenient 6-minute walk from the bus stop. With Phoenicia’s main street less than 5 minutes away, you can easily explore the area’s bars, restaurants, and shops on foot.
Note: Despite heavy snowfall during my stay, my car had no difficulties navigating in and out of the hotel’s driveway.

The standout dishes for me were the stracciatella and mortadella, grilled radicchio, and their grass-fed hanger steak. I really can’t choose between their made-in-house panna cotta and the array of gelato I sampled; both were perfection, especially with the light sprinkling of salt over the gelato, making it extra tasty.
