Empowering Journeys for Adventurous Women, Helping Women Travel Safely

A Black Girl’s Guide to Snowboarding and Skiing – the Prep Phase

Having ventured into snowboarding and skiing across four different countries and about eight ski resorts, all as a solo black female traveler, I’m excited to share my insights. While I may not be a pro at both sports just yet, I can certainly provide a helpful guide to snowboarding and skiing for black women interested in drawing from my personal experiences. This guide is part of a series where I will spotlight ski resorts where, I, as a black woman, felt most at ease. Additionally, I’ll recommend resorts that are particularly welcoming for beginners.

Before we dive into discussing the ski resorts I favored for various reasons, let’s ensure you’re well-prepared for your snowboarding or skiing adventure!

Choosing Between Skiing and Snowboarding: A Guide for Beginners

Choosing between skiing and snowboarding ultimately depends on your preferences and goals. Here’s a breakdown to help you make an informed decision:

Skiing:

  • Easier to learn the basics, making it more beginner-friendly.
  • More forgiving but difficult to progress to an advanced level
  • Skiing offers versatility in movement, not restricted to specific terrain conditions.
  • Ski poles provide support for standing up after a fall, offering greater independence.

Snowboarding:

- Advertisement - 468*60
  • Might have a steeper learning curve initially.
  • Once you master the basics, progressing to advanced levels becomes easier.
  • Considered “cooler” by some (myself included), offering a unique style on the slopes.
  • Requires a downhill slope to move forward, limiting movement on flat surfaces.
  • Falling and getting up can be challenging due to the board strapped to both feet.

Considerations:

  • Skiing is favored by marathoners and endurance sports enthusiasts for cross-country skiing.
  • Skiing is generally more popular, and there are more skiers than snowboarders.

Conclusion:
Ultimately, the choice between skiing and snowboarding depends on your personal preferences and what you want to achieve. If you prioritize an easier learning curve and versatility in movement, skiing may be the ideal choice. On the other hand, if you’re drawn to a unique style and are willing to invest time in overcoming the initial challenges, snowboarding might be the perfect fit. Ultimately, both sports offer a thrilling experience, so have fun exploring either one or both!

Get Your Wallet Ready: Budgeting for Snowboarding and Skiing

Embarking on a snowboarding or skiing adventure can be exhilarating, but it’s essential to prepare your pockets for the costs, especially in the United States. Here are some financial considerations to keep in mind:

1. Equipment and Lift Costs:

  • When choosing a ski resort, factor in the expenses of renting equipment and using ski lifts. These costs can add up, impacting your overall budget.

2. Accommodations:

  • Accommodations around ski resorts, both domestically and globally, tend to be on the higher end. Even hostels in these areas may surpass budget levels. Plan accordingly when selecting your lodging.

3. Dining Expenses:

  • Restaurants and bars near ski resorts are known for being on the pricey side. Budget for meals to avoid any financial surprises during your trip.

4. Daily Food and Drinks:

  • Allocate at least $150 per day for food and drinks. This estimate accounts for meals, snacks, and beverages, ensuring you’re financially prepared for your daily sustenance.

Planning and budgeting for these aspects will help you enjoy your snowboarding or skiing experience without the stress of unexpected expenses. Enjoy hitting the slopes!”

Choosing the Right Ski Resort: Factors to Consider

Selecting a ski resort is a crucial decision that hinges on various factors, primarily influenced by your budget and preferences. Here are key considerations to help you make an informed choice:

1. Proximity and Accessibility:

  • If you have multiple ski resorts within driving distance, assess conditions, reviews, and costs of slopes, lift tickets, equipment rental, and lessons.

2. Beginner-Friendly Conditions:

  • For beginners, consider visiting on non-holiday weekdays or opt for quieter resorts. This provides a more conducive environment for learning, with shorter lift lines and attentive staff.

3. Other Regional Activities:

  • Explore resorts that offer additional activities in the region. This can enhance your overall experience, especially if you’re planning a trip to a country you’ve always wanted to visit. Drawing from my own experience, I chose Niseko in Hokkaido, Japan, for its renowned slopes and low-peak season benefits. Niseko is often hailed as one of the best ski destinations globally. Besides snowboarding, I explored the Nikka distillery in Yoichi and savored Uni Murakami in Sapporo.

4. Combo Deals and Lessons:

  • Look for combo deals that cover equipment rentals, lessons, and lift tickets. Ski resorts like Belleayre, Gore, and Whiteface Ski Mountain offer such packages for those in or near New York

5. Apres-ski Atmosphere:

  • Consider the apres-ski scene. Niseko, for instance, offered a vibrant experience, although it’s worth noting that many working in resorts, bars, and accommodations are Australians.

By carefully considering these factors, you can tailor your choice to meet your expectations and make the most of your snowboarding or skiing adventure. Enjoy your time on the slopes!”

Exploring the Apres-Ski Social Scene: Tips for Party Enthusiasts

If you’re a party enthusiast looking to add some nightlife to your ski trip, here are some considerations to keep in mind:

1. Moderation is Key:

  • Be mindful of your alcohol intake, especially the night before skiing or snowboarding. Heavy drinking can wear your body down faster on the slopes.

2. Unique Apres-Ski Activities:

  • Bars around ski resorts often host apres-ski activities daily, creating a unique social scene. Each destination has its charm, offering a variety of experiences.

3. Solo Travelers:

  • For solo travelers, navigating the apres-ski scene can be a bit challenging if you are an introvert, especially if staying in private accommodations. Consider staying at a hostel if you want easier access to socialize.

4. European vs. New York Scene:

  • European ski resorts often boast vibrant outdoor rave-like scenes, depending on the time of travel. In contrast, New York’s apres-ski scene tends to be quieter.

While the party scene might not be everyone’s cup of tea, those eager to partake in apres-ski activities can choose destinations that align with their preferences. Always prioritize safety, and if you’re not into the party vibe, feel free to skip this section and focus on the other aspects of your ski trip. Cheers to a memorable adventure on and off the slopes!

Find Your Community in Snow Sports: Diversity in Skiing and Snowboarding

1. Connect with Black Skiers and Snowboarders in the United States:

  • Skiing and snowboarding often lack diversity, but some initiatives and communities cater specifically to black travelers. Check out the National Brotherhood of Snowsports, which organizes ski trips across the United States. They have 60 chapters and host regional ski trips.

2. Explore Black European Communities:

  • In Europe, consider joining Mount Noire, a community founded by black women. They organize luxurious ski trips around Europe, offering a unique experience. Another option is Off Piste Ski Trip, which appears more affordable, providing an opportunity for diverse skiing experiences.
  • If you know of more, please share in the comments below and we’ll do our best to include them!

3. Join Inclusive Tour Companies:

  • Explore tour companies that prioritize inclusivity and diversity. For those in the New York City or Northern New Jersey area, OVR Ride caters to a diverse and inclusive crowd, offering snow trips to local and international slopes (like Europe, Asia, South America, etc). Consider joining one of their day trips for a varied skiing experience.

4. Contiki for Young Adults:

  • If you’re between 18 and 35, and not concerned with experiencing skiing or snowboarding with other black or racially diverse communities, then consider traveling with Contiki. Known for its vibrant and social atmosphere, Contiki offers diverse travel experiences, including snow trips. Keep in mind that the focus on social activities may impact your liver, haha!

A Black Girl’s Guide to Snowboarding and Skiing- Don’t Forget to Protect Your Skin While on the Slopes

As a black woman, keeping my skin well-moisturized and supple is an art form that I have perfected, regardless of the weather. My skincare routine during my ski trip was pretty simple, and for ladies with dry skin like me, this should work well for you too.

Step 1 – I exfoliated my skin with Pigmented Beauty’s African Black Soap Sugar Scrub with Lemon and Lavender every day and night.

Step 2 – I moisturized my skin with Pigmented Beauty’s Minty Lave Oil, paying extra attention to my cheeks and forehead area because my balaclava rubbed more in those areas than everywhere else on my face.

Step 3 -I applied SPF to the exposed parts of my face before hitting the slopes. I used a random brand I found at home, but I recommend trying Black Girl Sunscreen to avoid the white film on the skin. This step is extremely important and should not be skipped. Even when there’s an overcast sky, you are still exposed to the sun for a prolonged time, and your skin can get sunburnt under snowy conditions.

Check the Weather Before Hitting the Road and the Slopes: A Winter Preparedness Guide

Before embarking on your snowboarding or skiing adventure, it’s crucial to stay informed about the weather conditions. Here are some essential tips to ensure a seamless and enjoyable trip:

1. Plan Ahead:

  • Avoid surprises by checking the weather forecast well in advance of your trip. Ensure it aligns with your expectations for optimal snow conditions and that your mode of transportation will get you to your destination safely.

2. Learn from Others’ Experiences:

  • Consider the cautionary tale of a couple I met in North Creek, New York, who booked a week of snowboarding without checking the weather. They had to cut their trip short due to unexpectedly warm conditions. Learn from their experience and plan accordingly.

3. Be Weather-Ready:

  • While ski resorts often produce artificial snow to maintain suitable conditions, be prepared for variable weather. Again, ensure your vehicle is equipped for icy conditions, and dress appropriately for the temperature.

4. Dress in Layers:

  • Avoid getting sick by dressing in layers to stay warm on the slopes. Being underdressed can lead to discomfort and health issues, putting a damper on your skiing or snowboarding experience.

5. Have Fun Safely:

  • Remember, the primary goal is to have fun. By checking the weather, preparing your vehicle, and dressing appropriately, you’re taking essential steps to ensure a safe and enjoyable winter adventure.

Stay informed, be prepared, and hit the slopes with confidence. Enjoy your snowboarding or skiing experience to the fullest!

What to Wear When Snowboarding and Skiing: A Winter Wardrobe Guide

For an enjoyable and comfortable snowboarding or skiing experience, having the right winter wardrobe is essential. While some ski resorts offer outerwear rental, this is rare in the United States. If you plan to rent, ensure you layer appropriately for warmth. My rule of thumb is to wear more than needed to avoid discomfort and potential health issues.

My Typical Uniform on the Slopes:

  • Thermal sets (up to 3 pairs in extremely cold conditions)
  • Yoga pants
  • T-shirt
  • Bib overalls
  • Jacket
  • Fleece gloves (useful on ski lifts)
  • Waterproof sport gloves
  • Goggles
  • Balaclava
  • Hand warmers (kept in pockets as a backup)
  • Compression socks

Women’s Outerwear Recommendations:

Considering the rarity of outerwear rental in the U.S., owning your set is crucial. If you plan to snowboard or ski internationally and want to avoid traveling with bulky outerwear, check with the specific resort for rental availability.

Mittens vs. Gloves:

  • According to experienced skiers and snowboarders, mittens are preferred over gloves for better heat retention. Mittens allow fingers to generate heat more efficiently.

For those looking to start their snowsports journey without breaking the bank, these budget-friendly outerwear recommendations provide a decent starting point. Keep warm, stay safe, and enjoy your time on the slopes!

Essential Base Wear Guide for Women: What to Wear for Snowboarding and Skiing

For many women, basewear preferences vary, and for beginners, prioritizing layers that offer versatility for regular everyday life is crucial. The key is to balance ease of movement with staying warm on the slopes. While some elements of your snow sports wardrobe may not transition to everyday wear, each piece serves a purpose in providing comfort and protection.

Balaclava Importance: One essential item that should not be overlooked is the balaclava. While it may not be a fashion statement beyond snow sports, its role in providing full-face coverage and protecting against the cold, especially in windy or extreme conditions, is invaluable.

Mittens vs. Gloves on Ski Lifts: As mentioned earlier, opting for mittens over gloves is a wise choice for better heat retention in the fingers. It’s important to note that ski lifts can be significantly colder, and in such situations, hand warmers tucked into gloves become lifesavers. This knowledge, gained from personal experience on the second day of snowboarding, prompted an immediate purchase of a pack of hand warmers.

By prioritizing comfort, warmth, and practicality in your basewear choices, you’ll enhance your overall snow sports experience and ensure you’re well-prepared for various weather conditions and situations on the slopes.

Guide to Snowboarding and Skiing: Must-Have Extras for Colder Temperatures

On a typical day of skiing or snowboarding, three layers of clothing should provide sufficient warmth. However, in the event of lower temperatures or if you plan to navigate higher elevations, adding an extra layer or two is advisable for safety. While the body generates more heat during the descent down the slope, it’s always better to prioritize warmth to prevent cold-related issues.

Additionally, having extra gloves is beneficial, particularly on colder days. This extra layer, whether worn under gloves or mittens, allows for easy hand movement and ensures optimal protection against the cold. Whether you choose gloves or mittens, having this additional layer is a wise precaution for maintaining comfortable and warm hands throughout your snowsports adventure.

Invest in a Minimum 2-Hour Lesson: Tips for Optimal Learning

When it comes to lessons for skiing or snowboarding, the duration matters. Here are some tips to make the most out of your learning experience:

1. Opt for at Least a 2-hour Lesson:

  • Avoid 1-hour lessons, as they may not provide sufficient time for substantial progress. Based on my experience, a 2-hour lesson is the sweet spot to advance 1-2 levels. If possible, consider stretching your budget for 2 hours over 2 days.

2. Practice and Rest:

  • After each lesson, spend time practicing what you’ve learned on the slope. However, avoid pushing your limits when fatigue sets in. The goal is to have fun, not risk injury.

3. Arrive Early:

  • Get to the ski resort at least 2 hours before the lesson. This allows ample time for gear setup and familiarization. Ensure your boots fit perfectly to prevent discomfort and strain.

4. Perfect Boot Fit:

  • Don’t hesitate to ask for a different pair of boots if needed. A perfect fit is crucial to prevent painful cramps and ensure a comfortable skiing or snowboarding experience.

5. Pre-Lesson Practice:

  • Before the lesson, practice getting in and out of your skis or snowboard on a flat, deserted ice surface. This skill becomes handy when you fall during lessons.

6. Watch Instructional Videos:

  • Watch and practice instructional videos for your chosen activity before the lesson. This allows you to grasp the basics, making your time with the instructor more focused on practical skills.

7. YouTube Resources:

  • If paid lessons are beyond your budget, explore YouTube for instructional videos. There are excellent resources, like the videos below for snowboard and ski beginners.

By following these tips, you’ll enhance your learning experience and make the most of your time on the slopes. Remember, the goal is to enjoy the process and build your skills gradually.

Physical Preparation for Skiing and Snowboarding: A Guide to Preventing Soreness

While skiing and snowboarding may appear easy, the after-effects can be felt in muscles you didn’t know existed. Here’s a guide to physical preparation to prevent post-trip soreness:

1. Daily Yoga Program:

  • Engage in a daily yoga program, focusing on balance, core strength, and muscle preparation. Programs like Beachbody Yoga can be beneficial in preventing soreness and improving overall flexibility. Start this at least 2 weeks before your ski trip.

2. Strengthen Lower Body:

  • Incorporate strength exercises for the lower body to enhance muscle endurance. See below for a 15-minute workout from YouTube that helped me target my lower-body strength and complimented my yoga routine.

3. Consistency is Key:

  • Stay consistent with your physical preparation routine, especially in the weeks leading up to your skiing or snowboarding trip. Regular sessions contribute to improved muscle strength and flexibility.

4. Morning and Evening Yoga:

  • Before hitting the slopes, engage in a 15-minute morning yoga session to prepare your body. In the evening, do a 15 – 20-minute relaxation yoga routine to ease muscle tension and promote recovery.

5. Address Joint Issues:

  • If you have joint issues, such as arthritis in your knees, prioritize exercises and practices that keep your joints limber. Yoga can be particularly beneficial in maintaining joint flexibility.

6. Listen to Your Body:

  • Pay attention to your body’s signals. If you feel excessive strain or discomfort, modify your routine accordingly. Ensure a balance between preparation and recovery.

By incorporating these practices into your routine, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of soreness and enjoy your skiing or snowboarding trip without the post-trip discomfort. Stay safe, stay limber, and have a fantastic time on the slopes!

How to Fall Safely While Snowboarding and Skiing: Essential Tips for Beginners

Learning how to fall safely is a crucial aspect of enjoying your skiing or snowboarding experience. Follow these essential tips to minimize the risk of injury:

1. Educate Yourself:

  • Watch instructional videos, like the one I’ve shared below, to familiarize yourself with proper falling techniques. Understanding the basics will help your body react more instinctively in challenging situations.

2. Embrace the Tumble:

  • Accept that falling is a natural part of the learning process. Embrace it as an opportunity to refine your skills and build resilience.

3. Protect Your Joints:

  • Focus on protecting your joints by avoiding rigid postures during a fall. Allow your body to bend and absorb the impact, utilizing the natural cushioning provided by the snow.

4. Roll with the Fall:

  • Instead of resisting the fall, try to roll with it. Distribute the impact across a larger surface area, reducing the force exerted on specific body parts.

5. Keep Arms In:

  • Protect your wrists by keeping your arms close to your body during a fall. Avoid extending them to break the fall, as this can lead to wrist injuries.

6. Relax Your Muscles:

  • Tensing up during a fall can increase the risk of injury. Try to relax your muscles and go with the flow, allowing for a more controlled descent.

7. Practice Falling Techniques:

  • Set aside time to practice falling techniques in a controlled environment, such as a flat, thick snow-covered surface. This allows you to build muscle memory and react more confidently on the slopes.

Remember, falling is a part of the learning curve, and prioritizing safety ensures a more enjoyable experience. By incorporating these tips into your practice, you’ll be better equipped to navigate falls with minimal impact on your body. Stay safe, stay resilient, and have a fantastic time in the snow!

Visit an Indoor Slope if You Live Near One!

Learn how to Ski and Snowboard at Big Snow at the American Dream Mall, New Jersey

For those who live near Northern New Jersey, Big Snow, the only indoor ski slope in America is at the American Dream Mall. Open year-round, this facility offers an ideal environment for learning the fundamental skills of skiing and snowboarding, making it a perfect starting point before venturing onto mountain slopes.

Even if you’re familiar with the basics, Big Snow provides an excellent venue to refresh your skills, warm up before hitting the mountains, or test out new equipment.

If you opt for their SNOW Day Package, you’ll receive equipment rental, outerwear, helmet, and 2-hour lift access along with access to the self-guided Terrain Based Learning Area. Note that gloves or socks are not included in this package.

Ladies, mark your calendars for Wednesday Women’s Night, where they encourage women to have fun on the slopes as a community from 5 pm to 8 pm. Last year, they offered free lesson programs for ladies on Wednesdays (slope access tickets required), so stay tuned to their Instagram feed for any similar offerings this year.

Additionally, you have the option to purchase a 2-hour lesson at $299, which does not include equipment or slope access. Comparatively, this price may seem steep, especially when compared to Belleayre’s $99 package, which includes a 1-hour lesson, equipment, and ski lift access.

Ski and Snowboard at Big Snow
A Black Girl's Guide to Snowboarding and Skiing - the Prep Phase 33

Check out their page on Groupon, they sometimes have amazing discounts; I purchased their SNOW Day Package at $70 instead of the $99 on their website. I also got their $199 SNOW Day 3 Pack because I plan to keep snowboarding during the summer. Following them on Instagram is highly recommended as they frequently share extra deals. I missed their 50% off deal by minutes a few weeks ago and it still hurts my soul.

I’ve gone snowboarding a few times at Big Snow and while the slopes are not as challenging as what you will experience at the mountain slopes, it is great for practicing and learning from the pros. The community there is the most diverse I’ve experienced and cordial. On busy days, I noticed a safety yield system, where everyone is conscious about making sure there’s enough slope space before riding the slope after the previous rider.
