There are places you visit because you know exactly what to expect. Then there are places like Mohonk Mountain House.
I knew Mohonk would be beautiful. That much was obvious before I arrived; a historic mountain resort perched beside a lake in New Paltz, New York, with wraparound porches, rocking chairs, hiking trails, a spa, grand dining rooms, and the kind of old-world charm that makes you feel like you’ve accidentally wandered into someone’s very elegant family tradition.
What I didn’t expect was to be this impressed by the food. I didn’t expect to sit through a woodpecker lesson and leave with genuine respect for birds I’d previously only associated with cartoons and noisy trees. I didn’t expect to spend part of my weekend holding in laughter while watching people attempt to row across a lake with varying degrees of grace. And I definitely didn’t expect to find a hibiscus and tamarind dessert at a historic Hudson Valley resort that made me feel, very unexpectedly, like I’d tasted a little bit of home.
Mohonk is often described as an all-inclusive resort, and that’s part of the appeal. Your stay includes meals, activities, access to the trails, programming, and the general ease of knowing that once you arrive, you don’t need to keep pulling out your wallet or planning every hour of your day. But calling Mohonk “all-inclusive” almost undersells it.
This is not the kind of all-inclusive where you could be anywhere in the world as long as there’s a buffet, a pool, and a drink in your hand. Mohonk has a sense of place. It has history. It has rituals, and repeat guests who return year after year like they’re coming back to a family estate. After one weekend there, I understood why.

A historic house that feels like its own world
Mohonk Mountain House doesn’t feel like a hotel. It feels like a world you enter.
The building has that grand, slightly storybook quality that makes you slow down before you’ve even checked in. There’s the lake, still and scenic, framed by cliffs and trees. There are rocking chairs facing the water, long hallways that feel like they hold decades of stories, and views that turn a simple walk from one part of the property to another into part of the experience.
It’s the kind of place where you could arrive with a full itinerary and still be tempted to abandon half of it just to sit somewhere beautiful… and that was what I loved most. Mohonk gives you options without making you feel pressured by them. You can hike, learn archery, join a nature program, book spa time, row on the lake, walk the grounds, or sit in a rocking chair and do absolutely nothing.
My visit came at a time when work had been overwhelming, so I appreciated that Mohonk let me choose my own pace. There was plenty to do, but I never felt like I was failing at the experience if I decided to sit still and breathe it all in. There’s something about a rocking chair facing a lake that immediately tells your nervous system to calm down. I could go from an excellent meal to an outdoor activity, from a structured program to a quiet moment by the water, from laughter to stillness. The weekend had rhythm. It had texture. It had space.
A lot of resorts are designed around constant stimulation. Mohonk understands the beauty of letting guests slow down. And sometimes, that’s the real luxury.
The first dinner, when Mohonk started to surprise me
The first dinner was when Mohonk began to quietly exceed my expectations.
The dining leaned Modern American, with fast, polished service that felt efficient without being cold. Courses arrived quickly, but the meal never felt rushed; the kind of service that takes care of you without making a performance out of it.
Dinner started with local bread and butter. Simple, but not forgettable. The butter was churned at a farm about an hour away, and it set the tone immediately. There’s something quietly luxurious about excellent bread and good butter. It doesn’t need to shout. It just makes you pay attention.
From there came soup and croquettes, then halibut for my entrée; a bit of a gamble, since I’ve had way too many fancy restaurants serve me overcooked fish. But this was delicious and perfectly cooked, from the first bite I knew my weekend of indulgence was going to be a good one.
But dessert was where the evening became memorable. I ordered chocolate cake and asked if they could add nuts. They brought toasted walnuts, and that little addition made every bite better. The cake was rich and deeply chocolatey, but not in that overwhelming way where each bite after the third feels like a chore. The walnuts added warmth, texture, and a slight bitterness that balanced the richness beautifully.
Then came the dessert I absolutely did not expect: hibiscus and tamarind sherbet served with two sugar cookie sticks.
This was not a shy dessert. It was tart, floral, and bold in a way that caught my attention immediately. Hibiscus in desserts is often more about color than flavor; it shows up, looks pretty, and stays politely in the background. But this hibiscus was fully present, with that sharp floral tartness that wakes up your palate, rounded out by the sweet-sour depth of tamarind. I even got a small bite of tamarind flesh in the sherbet, which made it feel freshly made and intentional.
It’s not a dessert for everyone, but it is absolutely a dessert for people who love tartness and flavors that keep unfolding. And maybe that’s why it stayed with me. Tamarind may be having its moment as a trending flavor, but for me it’s also familiar. It tastes like home. Finding that sharp, sweet, nostalgic flavor tucked into a dessert at a historic Hudson Valley resort was such a lovely surprise.
By the end of night one, I was impressed. But I still wondered if dinner had been a fluke.
Night two, when Mohonk proved it wasn’t a fluke
Right when I thought the first night might have been a lucky one-off, night two made me pause in genuine awe.
This time I had a dinner partner, which meant I could indulge in more desserts without an ounce of guilt, one of the greatest benefits of dining with someone who understands the assignment. We ordered the Cold-Set Lemongrass Cream Gâteau with kalamansi curd, green tea caviar, and ginger crumble; the famous Mohonk Crunch Cake; and cheesecake.
Every bite was scrumptious. But the lemongrass gâteau nearly had me in tears.
I know that sounds dramatic, but I mean it. It was hands down one of the best dessert experiences I’ve ever had, and as someone who once flew to Singapore for food, that’s not a statement I make lightly.
Lemongrass can so easily tip into perfume territory, too sharp, too floral, too much of everything. But this was handled with restraint and precision. The cream was delicate without disappearing. The kalamansi brought brightness. The ginger crumble added warmth and texture. The green tea caviar gave the whole dish an elegant, unexpected finish. It was fragrant but not overwhelming, bright but not acidic, creamy but not heavy, interesting without trying too hard. Give me a vat of that gâteau and I’d be perfectly content.
The Crunch Cake and cheesecake were also delicious, but the lemongrass gâteau was the dessert that stopped the conversation, the kind of dish that makes you look at your dining partner with wide eyes because words feel temporarily inadequate.
That was the moment I realized Mohonk wasn’t just serving good resort food. Mohonk was serving food worth talking about.
The egg station can have all my coins
And then there was breakfast.
I got a plate of eggs Benedict, then a second plate with an omelette filled with feta, then added waffles and fruit on the side because apparently I had decided breakfast was now a competitive sport. My day was, in the most accurate way possible, egg-cellent.
Breakfast at a resort can feel like a functional meal, something to get through before the day starts. At Mohonk it felt like part of the experience, generous, satisfying, and easy to overdo in the best possible way. The good news is the property gives you endless ways to pretend you’re balancing it out. You can hike, row, take a fitness class, learn archery, or take a long scenic walk and tell yourself it canceled out the waffles. But really, it’s a holiday. Who’s counting?
A birding weekend I didn’t see coming
I visited during Birding Weekend, and of all the things I expected from Mohonk, this wasn’t one of them.
I knew there’d be activities and nature. I didn’t expect the birding community to feel so warm, familiar, and deeply enthusiastic. Mohonk draws a dedicated group of bird watchers for this event, and being around them felt almost like witnessing an annual reunion. There were bird walks, talks, and conversations happening around the property that made it clear this wasn’t a casual side event. People weren’t just attending a resort program. They were returning to a shared tradition.
And I learned far more than I expected. I now have a profound respect for woodpeckers. Fun fact: a woodpecker’s tongue wraps all the way around its skull, reaching toward the forehead. That little piece of information has lived rent-free in my mind ever since.
I won’t pretend I left as a newly minted birding expert. But I can now spot a tree that’s clearly been worked over by woodpeckers, and I’ll be unnecessarily proud of myself every single time. That’s one of the things Mohonk does well, it lets you learn without making the experience feel like homework. You can be a beginner, an enthusiast, or simply curious, and still walk away with something memorable.
From archery to Sky Top Tower
There’s a lot to do here. Over my weekend I learned archery, hiked to Sky Top Tower, attended that woodpecker lesson, joined a nature drawing activity, and spent plenty of time simply absorbing the atmosphere.
The hike to Sky Top Tower is one of those classic Mohonk experiences that rewards you with both movement and perspective. Seeing the property from above; the lake, the trees, the mountain landscape stretching around you, makes the resort feel even more impressive, because you realize how beautifully it sits within the land.
Archery was a fun surprise too. It’s not something I’d normally seek out on a weekend trip, but at Mohonk it felt perfectly in place. That’s part of the charm: the property invites you to try things without overthinking them.
And then there were the quieter moments. Sitting by the lake. Watching people row. Trying not to laugh too loudly when the rowing got more chaotic than scenic. That mix is what made the weekend special. Mohonk can be active, educational, indulgent, romantic, family-friendly, outdoorsy, food-focused, or deeply restful depending on how you choose to experience it. It doesn’t force one version of a vacation on you. It gives you room to find your own.
Why Mohonk feels different from other all-inclusives
I’ve been to all-inclusive resorts before, and I understand the appeal. There’s ease in knowing your meals are covered, comfort in not having to plan every detail, convenience in having amenities available without constantly calculating costs.
But at many all-inclusives, the destination feels secondary to the resort. You could be anywhere. The food, decor, and activities are pleasant but not rooted. Mohonk feels rooted. The history is present. The landscape matters. The traditions matter. The guests who return year after year matter. The food reflects the Hudson Valley while still leaving room for surprises, like a hibiscus and tamarind sherbet or a lemongrass gâteau that completely steals the show.
This is honestly the first all-inclusive I’d happily revisit and still feel like I was experiencing culture, history, and a sense of place. That’s not the norm. And that’s exactly why it stayed with me.
Who Mohonk is best for
Mohonk is a great fit for travelers who want a getaway that feels easy without feeling generic; couples, friend trips, families, nature lovers, food lovers, and solo travelers who like having a day’s worth of things to do already laid out for them.
It’s especially ideal if you live in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or the surrounding region and want a trip that feels like an escape without needing to fly. Mohonk gives you that rare feeling of being far away while staying relatively close to home.
For solo women travelers, I think it’s a strong option too. The property feels contained and activity-rich, which makes it easy to enjoy alone without feeling isolated. You can join programs, sit in public spaces, walk the grounds, and build your day around your own energy. You can be social if you want to be, or completely content in your own company.
A few tips for visiting
Come hungry. The meals are a major part of the experience, and if you love food, you’ll want room to enjoy them.
Pack comfortable shoes. Even if you’re not planning to be active, the property invites wandering. Between the lake, trails, gardens, porches, and activity areas, you’ll walk more than you expect.
Check the event calendar before booking. Mohonk’s themed weekends shape the feel of your stay. Birding Weekend added an unexpected layer to my trip, and I’d recommend choosing a weekend with programming that interests you.
Leave room to do nothing. It’s tempting to fill every hour because there’s so much available, but some of the best moments happen when you simply sit by the lake or take in the view from a rocking chair.
Try one thing you wouldn’t normally try. For me, that was archery and the bird programming. Those unexpected activities became part of what made the weekend memorable.
And please, do not skip dessert.
Final thoughts
I came to Mohonk expecting beauty, history, and a relaxing escape. I left talking about lemongrass gâteau, woodpeckers, toasted walnuts, lake views, archery, breakfast eggs, and the strange joy of watching people try to row out of the dock area.
Mohonk wasn’t just beautiful. It was layered. It gave me indulgence and nature, quiet and activity, history and surprise, a place to rest when I needed rest, and enough to explore when I wanted to feel engaged again. Most of all, it gave me the rare all-inclusive experience that didn’t feel disconnected from where it actually was. Mohonk feels like Mohonk: not a generic luxury escape, not a place that could be copied and pasted anywhere else, but a living tradition you step into.
